Product Overview
The SVBONY SV225 is a manual alt-azimuth mount head for visual astronomy and daytime terrestrial viewing. It takes your telescope on a Vixen-style dovetail saddle, threads onto a tripod through a UNC 3/8″-16 base, and moves on both axes with variable-speed slow-motion controls. The CNC-machined metal head uses a hollowed structure to keep it to 2.34 kg while carrying up to 10 kg of additional load, which SVBONY rates as enough for its 122 mm SV550 refractor. Azimuth turns a full 360°, and altitude runs from -60° to +60°.

Who It's For
This is a good match if you want a grab-and-go mount for a refractor, Maksutov or spotting scope and would rather point by hand than set up power, alignment or software. It works well as a first mount, since there is nothing to learn beyond loosening a lock and turning a control, and as a quick second rig for an experienced observer who wants a heavier tube on a light head. At 10 kg of payload it carries more than the compact SV225 MINI, which tops out at 5 kg.
Key Features & Design
- Vixen-style saddle: accepts the Vixen dovetail fitted to most small and mid-size telescopes.
- UNC 3/8″-16 base thread: the standard large tripod thread; SVBONY lists it as compatible with Celestron, Sky-Watcher, Orion, Vixen and most mainstream astronomical equipment.
- Variable-speed slow motion on both axes: for keeping the Moon and planets centred at high magnification.
- Fine-tuning control lever: for small corrections once a target is in the field.
- Quick adjustment handle: for fast, coarse repositioning between targets.
- Digital marked dial: scales for returning to a known position.
- Heightening bracket: raises the telescope saddle above the mount base.
- 10 kg payload, 2.34 kg head: CNC-machined hollow metal structure.

Mechanical Design
Both axes run through a helical (worm-type) drive, which gives the slow-motion controls a fine, even response and holds the telescope where you leave it. The variable-speed gearing lets you move quickly to a target and then slow right down to track it across the eyepiece field, and the separate fine-tuning lever handles the last small correction. The marked dial gives a reference scale on the axis so you can return to a position or step between objects a known distance apart.

Recommended Uses
- Lunar and planetary observing with hand tracking through the slow-motion controls.
- Double stars and brighter deep-sky objects from the backyard or a dark-sky trip.
- Heavier visual tubes up to 10 kg, including SVBONY's SV550 122 mm refractor.
- Daytime terrestrial viewing with a spotting scope or small refractor on a Vixen bar.

Compatibility and Accessory Notes
- Telescope side: Vixen-style dovetail. A telescope in tube rings, or one with an Arca-Swiss or finder-style foot, attaches with a Vixen plate such as the SVBONY SV239 dovetail plate.
- Tripod side: UNC 3/8″-16 female thread. The matching legs are the SVBONY SV225T tripod.
- Extra height: the SVBONY SV225H riser adds 240 mm between tripod and head, so a long refractor and diagonal clear the legs near the zenith.
- Payload: 10 kg of additional load on the mount head. Your tripod's own rating also applies.

If you are not sure your telescope or tripod fits, send us the make and model and we will check it with you.
Good to Know Before You Order
- Mount head only: the tripod and telescope are sold separately; the SV225T and SV225H can be added with the checkboxes on this page.
- Manual mount: there is no motor drive, GoTo or tracking; you follow objects with the slow-motion controls.
- Alt-azimuth motion: the field rotates during long exposures, so it suits visual use and short phone or camera shots of the Moon and planets rather than tracked deep-sky imaging.
- Package contents: SVBONY does not publish an itemized contents list for the SV225.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it difficult to set up?
No. Thread the head onto your tripod's 3/8″-16 stud, slide the telescope's Vixen dovetail into the saddle and tighten the lock. There is no power, alignment or software involved.
How much weight can it carry?
SVBONY rates the SV225 for up to 10 kg of additional load, enough for its own SV550 122 mm refractor.
Does it come with a tripod?
No. It is the mount head only. The SV225T tripod is made to match it, and any tripod with a 3/8″-16 stud also fits.
Can it track the sky automatically?
No. It is a manual mount; the variable-speed slow-motion controls let you follow objects by hand.
How is it different from the SV225 MINI?
The SV225 carries 10 kg and weighs 2.34 kg; the SV225 MINI carries 5 kg and weighs 1546 g, for smaller travel setups.
Bottom Line
In short: a 2.34 kg manual alt-az head with a Vixen saddle, variable-speed slow motion on both axes and a 10 kg payload, ready to thread onto any 3/8″-16 tripod for visual observing.
