Product Overview
The ZWO M54M-M48F Adapter converts an M54 male thread to an M48 female thread — the 2" filter standard — and does so with effectively no added optical length. The M48 thread is cut on the inside and the M54 on the outside, so the two threads occupy the same space rather than sitting end to end.
That is the entire point of this part. Where a normal adapter costs you millimetres you then have to subtract elsewhere, this one changes the thread standard while leaving your backfocus sum essentially untouched.
Who It's For
This is a good match if your backfocus is already correct and you simply need an M54 thread to become an M48 thread — with nothing added to the chain.
It is also the right part if you want to thread a 2" filter onto an M54 camera or filter drawer without disturbing spacing you have already dialled in.
Key Features & Design
- Zero effective optical length: the threads are nested rather than stacked, so it adds no meaningful distance to the imaging train
- M54 male on the outside, M48 female on the inside: a thread-standard conversion in a single ring
- Accepts 2" filters directly via the M48 × 0.75 female thread
- Machined aluminium ring, low profile by design
- Mechanical only — no optics, no glass, no electrical connection
Recommended Uses
- Converting M54 to M48 when your backfocus sum is already correct and has no room to give
- Threading a 2" filter onto an M54-threaded camera, drawer, or accessory
- Connecting M54 accessories to M48 components across an existing imaging train
- Rescuing a chain that is already at its limit, where any added length would push you past your flattener's spacing
Compatibility and Accessory Notes
- Thread interface: M54 × 0.75 male on the outside, M48 × 0.75 female on the inside
- Confirm your camera's rear thread first. ZWO uses M42, M54, and M68 across the range — this part is M54 only
- Need length as well as conversion? The M54-M48-21 gives the same thread change plus a fixed 21 mm, which is often what a 55 mm backfocus chain actually needs
- Filters still add optical path. The adapter adds nothing, but a filter threaded into it shifts focus by roughly one third of its glass thickness. Account for that separately
- Mechanical adapter only — no electronic communication with the camera
Important Limitations
- It adds no length — which is a limitation as much as a feature. If your chain is short of 55 mm, this part will not help you get there. You need a spacer or a longer adapter instead
- This is not a corrector. It does not flatten a field, reduce focal ratio, or improve star shapes
- M54 male only. It will not thread to an M42 or M68 camera without a further adapter
- No filter, no optics, and no camera included. This is a bare aluminium ring
- Low profile means little to grip. Tighten by hand and do not force it — aluminium threads will gall if cross-threaded
Frequently Asked Questions
How much length does this add to my imaging train?
Effectively none. The M48 female thread is cut inside the M54 male thread, so the conversion happens in the same space rather than adding a section. That is what distinguishes it from every other M54-to-M48 part.
What is the difference between this and the M54-M48-21?
Same thread conversion, different length. This one adds nothing; the M54-M48-21 adds a fixed 21 mm. Which you want depends entirely on whether your backfocus sum needs filling or is already correct.
Can I thread a 2" filter into it?
Yes. The M48 × 0.75 female thread is the 2" filter standard.
Which cameras does this fit?
Anything with an M54 male-compatible thread — ZWO's M54-threaded cooled cameras, filter drawers, and accessories. Check your model, since ZWO also uses M42 and M68.
My backfocus is 21 mm short. Is this the part I need?
No — the opposite. This adds nothing. You want the M54-M48-21, which contributes exactly that.
Does it affect image quality?
Not on its own. It has no glass. It only matters in that it lets you keep a spacing figure you have already got right.
Is this good for beginners?
It is simple to fit. The judgement is knowing whether you need a zero-length conversion or a spacer — work out your full chain first.
Bottom Line
In short: an M54 male to M48 female adapter that changes the thread standard and adds effectively nothing to your optical train. Buy it when your backfocus is already right and you just need M54 to become M48. If you are short on length, buy the M54-M48-21 instead.
