Is it difficult to set up?

The mechanical side is simple: the tripod is spread and levelled, the mount goes on top, the optical tube seats on the mount and the accessories go on. The part that is new to most people is the alignment routine, where the mount asks you to centre a bright star or two so it can work out where it is pointing. It is a guided process through the hand controller and takes a few minutes once you have done it once. We are happy to walk you through the first alignment over the phone.

What does SkyAssist do?

It is the technology behind the mount's automated pointing: you select an object and the mount slews to it and then tracks it, keeping it in the eyepiece rather than letting the Earth's rotation carry it out of the field.

What magnification will I get?

Magnification is the telescope's focal length divided by the eyepiece's. Explore Scientific does not publish the focal length for this tube, so we would rather ask them than quote a number we cannot source. Send us a message and we will chase it down.

What can I expect to see?

Lunar craters and mountain shadows in real detail, Saturn's rings, the four Galilean moons of Jupiter and its main cloud belts, the phases of Venus, bright double stars, open clusters, the brighter nebulae and globular clusters, and the nearer galaxies as soft grey shapes. Sky darkness affects the deep-sky end far more than the Solar System end.
