Product Overview
The EZY Focus is a wired hand controller for Pegasus Astro motorised focusers. It plugs into the EXT port on a supported controller with an RJ12 lead and gives you a rotary encoder, two preset-step buttons and a 1.3-inch OLED readout — so you can focus at the telescope, watching the star rather than a laptop screen.
Pegasus Astro lists it as working with the Ultimate Powerbox v2 and v3, the Prodigy Microfocuser and the FocusCube v3.
Who It's For
This is a good match if you:
- Observe visually with a motorised focuser and do not want a computer in the loop just to change focus.
- Set up at the telescope — framing, star testing, checking collimation — and want the focus control in your hand rather than on the imaging PC.
- Want to see the position number while you turn, so you can note a good focus point and return to it.
- Image at night and value dark adaptation — the display uses a red film and the built-in light is red and adjustable.
Key Features & Design
- Rotary digital encoder with push button: turn to move focus; press to toggle between fine and coarse step size.
- Two preset-step buttons: the << and >> keys jump by a set number of steps rather than turning the knob.
- 1.3-inch 128 x 64 OLED display with red film: shows motor position, presets and settings.
- Adjustable red LED light: enough to find an eyepiece or a knob without resetting your dark adaptation.
- Audible confirmation: a beep on button press, so you know the input registered without looking down.
- 1.5 m RJ12 lead included, plus a detachable lanyard.
- Light in the hand: 113 x 46 x 25 mm and 90 g.
Recommended Uses
- Visual observing sessions with a motorised focuser and no computer running.
- Star testing and collimation checks where you want to be at the eyepiece while focusing.
- Setting and noting a repeatable focus position by its displayed number.
- Public outreach and star parties, where handing someone a knob beats handing them a laptop.
Compatibility and Accessory Notes
- Published compatibility: Ultimate Powerbox v2, Ultimate Powerbox v3, Prodigy Microfocuser and FocusCube v3.
- Connection: RJ12 to RJ12 into the EXT port on the controller, using the supplied 1.5 m cable.
- FocusCube 1 and 2 use a different hand controller — Pegasus Astro publishes a separate unit for those. Ask us and we will point you at the right one.
- Running something else? Tell us which controller is on your rig and we will confirm whether the EZY Focus is the right match before you order.
Good to Know Before You Order
- It works alongside software, not instead of it. Positions set by hand are the same positions your imaging software sees, so an autofocus run afterwards picks up from where you left it.
- It needs a supported controller. The EZY Focus has no motor driver of its own — it is an input device for a controller that already drives your focuser.
- Wired, not wireless. The 1.5 m lead sets how far you can stand from the controller; worth a thought if your powerbox is at the far end of the rig.
- Pegasus Astro publishes 90 g. That is well under a pound, so our declared 1 lb shipping weight is the carrier minimum rather than the true mass.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it difficult to set up?
No. One RJ12 cable into the EXT port and it works — there are no drivers to install and nothing to configure.
Which controllers does it work with?
Ultimate Powerbox v2 and v3, the Prodigy Microfocuser and the FocusCube v3.
Will it work with my FocusCube 2?
No — the FocusCube 1 and 2 take a different hand controller. Get in touch and we will sort out which one you need.
Can I change how far each click moves the focuser?
Yes. Pressing the encoder toggles between fine and coarse, and the << and >> buttons move by a preset step.
Does it ruin dark adaptation?
The display is fitted with a red film and the built-in light is red and adjustable, both chosen for exactly that reason.
Bottom Line
In short: a 90 g wired hand controller that puts focus on a knob at the telescope, with the position on a red OLED readout — for Ultimate Powerbox v2 and v3, Prodigy Microfocuser and FocusCube v3.
