Product Overview
This is the Pegasus Astro environmental sensor probe, terminated in an RJ12 jack. It reports ambient temperature, relative humidity and the calculated dew point back to a Pegasus Astro controller, which is what allows the controller's AutoDew function to work without you having to judge conditions yourself.
It is the replacement or spare probe for the RJ12-equipped controllers in the range: Ultimate Powerbox v2 and v3, Pocket Powerbox Advance, Pocket Powerbox Micro, and DewMaster 2.
Who It's For
This is a good match if you:
- Already own an RJ12-equipped Pegasus controller and need a replacement probe, or a second one for a different rig.
- Want dew heaters to regulate themselves rather than setting a power level manually and hoping it is right for the night.
- Log observing conditions and want temperature and humidity passed through to your capture software.
Key Features & Design
- Three readings from one probe: ambient temperature, relative humidity, and dew point derived from both.
- RJ12 termination: plugs into the EXT or sensor port on compatible Pegasus controllers.
- Drives AutoDew: the controller uses the dew point reading to set dew heater power automatically.
- Passes data onward: readings are available to astronomy software through the Pegasus Unity platform and ASCOM ObservingConditions.
- Externally mounted: sits away from the controller body so it measures ambient air rather than warm electronics.
Recommended Uses
- Enabling automatic dew heater control on a UPBv2, UPBv3, PPB Advance, PPB Micro or DewMaster 2.
- Replacing a damaged or lost original probe.
- Adding condition logging to an imaging session for later reference.
Compatibility and Accessory Notes
- RJ12 connector only. Compatible with Ultimate Powerbox v2 and v3, Pocket Powerbox Advance, Pocket Powerbox Micro, and DewMaster 2.
- Not the 3.5 mm jack probe. Controllers using a 3.5 mm jack — DMFC, Prodigy and FocusCube 3 — take the separate jack-terminated sensor instead.
- Not the RJ45 probe. FocusCube 1 and 2 use an RJ45 temperature sensor, which is a different part.
- One probe per controller port. The controller detects the probe automatically once connected.
Good to Know Before You Order
- Check your connector first. Pegasus uses three different sensor terminations across the range — RJ12, RJ45 and 3.5 mm jack. Matching the connector to your controller is the one thing worth confirming, and we are happy to check it for you before you order.
- This is a sensor, not a heater. It measures conditions; the dew heater straps and the controller do the warming.
- Mount it in open air. Readings reflect wherever the probe sits, so tucking it against a warm tube or inside a case will skew the dew point calculation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it difficult to set up?
No. Plug the RJ12 connector into the controller's sensor port and the controller detects it on its own. There is nothing to configure.
Which controllers does it fit?
The RJ12-equipped ones: Ultimate Powerbox v2 and v3, Pocket Powerbox Advance, Pocket Powerbox Micro, and DewMaster 2.
Do I need it for AutoDew to work?
Yes. AutoDew sets heater power from the dew point, and the dew point comes from this probe. Without it you can still set heater levels manually.
Can I run two probes on one controller?
Each sensor port takes one probe. Check your controller's port count if you want readings from more than one location.
Will my capture software see the readings?
Yes, via the Pegasus Unity platform and the ASCOM ObservingConditions interface, which most major capture packages support.
Bottom Line
In short: the RJ12 environmental probe that gives Pegasus controllers the temperature, humidity and dew point data AutoDew needs. Match the connector to your controller and it works the moment it is plugged in.
