Product Overview

The RAEXT is Losmandy's G11 RA extension dovetail, for use on the G11G and GM811G with the newly designed tucked motors. It allows the RA and DEC axes to be separated without any tools.

Who It's For

A G-11 head weighs 33 to 36 lb in one piece, and lifting that onto a tripod in the dark is the part of the evening nobody enjoys. This splits the head at a dovetail joint into two manageable halves, with no tools involved, so the mount goes out in two trips instead of one heavy one. It also turns swapping between axis configurations into a two-minute job rather than a bench session.

Key Features & Design

  • Separates RA and DEC without any tools.
  • For the G11G and GM811G with tucked motors — Losmandy's newer motor design.
  • Dovetail joint, so the two halves locate positively rather than being aligned by eye.

Recommended Uses

Splitting a G-11 or GM811 head into two lighter pieces for transport. Setting up and tearing down single-handed. Swapping quickly between axis configurations — a G11 DEC one night, a GM8 DEC the next. Dark-sky trips where the mount is carried rather than wheeled.

Compatibility and Accessory Notes

  • Mounts: the G11G and GM811G with tucked motors. If your mount has the non-tucked motor design, the RA extension kit is the version for it — tell us which you have and we will confirm.
  • Axis swaps: it pairs with the G11 DEC axis and GM8 DEC axis for quick-change configurations.
  • Saddle: plates and saddles are unaffected — D-series and Vixen-style V-series dovetails clamp as before.

Good to Know Before You Order

  • Tucked or non-tucked motors decides which part you need. This one is for tucked motors; the RAEXK covers non-tucked G11 mounts. Send us a photo of the motor area if you are unsure and we will tell you.
  • It adds a joint to the head. That is the point, and it is a dovetail rather than a friction fit — but it is worth checking it is fully seated and clamped each time the mount goes together.
  • Losmandy publishes no weight or dimensions for this part.
  • Specifications are Losmandy's published figures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it difficult to set up?

Fitting it is a one-time job on the mount. After that, separating the axes is tool-free.

Which mounts does it fit?

The G11G and GM811G with tucked motors.

What if my motors are not tucked?

The RA extension kit is the version for non-tucked G11 mounts, and it does rather more — it also allows a meridian flip through.

Why would I want the axes to separate?

Weight, mostly. Two lighter pieces are easier and safer to carry than one 36 lb head.

Does it change how the mount performs?

No. It is a mechanical joint between the axes, not a change to the gear train.

Bottom Line

In short: the G11 RA extension dovetail for tucked-motor G11G and GM811G mounts — it lets RA and DEC come apart without tools, so the head travels in two pieces.
