About the Celestron CG-4
The CG-4 is the German equatorial mount Celestron supplies with its Omni XLT series telescopes, and it has a long-standing reputation as the sweet spot for small to mid-sized refractors and Newtonians. You get proper RA and Dec slow-motion controls with setting circles, a solid 1.75" steel leg tripod with a centre brace for rigidity, and a two-counterweight setup that balances a wide range of tubes. It tracks by hand smoothly enough for comfortable visual work at high magnification, and the design has been around long enough that parts and upgrades are easy to find.
That upgrade path is the real appeal at this price. Add the Celestron Dual-Axis Motor Drive for CG-4 for hands-free tracking and short-exposure imaging, and the CG-4 Polar Axis Finder for quick, accurate polar alignment — turning a manual visual mount into a capable tracking platform for well under the cost of a new GoTo setup.
