The Askar 203APO is the flagship of the Askar APO series — an eight-inch (203mm) aperture, f/7 triplet air-spaced apochromatic refractor from Askar (Jiaxing Sharpstar Optical Instrument Co., Ltd.). With a 1421mm focal length and a limiting magnitude of 13.3, the 203APO represents the pinnacle of what Askar has achieved in large-aperture refractor design, combining exceptional optical performance with a well-thought-out mechanical package that manages the weight and size challenges of this aperture class.

Who Is This Product Best For?

  • Professional and elite-level astrophotographers who demand the absolute maximum from a refractor platform
  • Observatory operators with permanent pier setups and heavy-payload mounts
  • High-resolution galaxy, globular cluster, and planetary nebula imagers where aperture and focal length are everything
  • Advanced visual observers seeking the finest large-aperture refractor experience available

Why Choose This Product?

  • 203mm (8") f/7 triplet APO optics with one ED glass element — extraordinary light-gathering power with true APO colour correction
  • Limiting magnitude of 13.3 — the deepest in the Askar APO series; 20% larger aperture area than the 185APO
  • Integrated retractable rear lens tube (150mm) with rudder-type locking ring
  • 3.5" dual-speed rack-and-pinion focuser with 1:10 fine adjustment, 100mm travel, CNC machined anti-reflective interior
  • 360° high-precision rotator with locking scale
  • 500mm Losmandy dovetail plate included — the longest in the APO series, providing maximum balance flexibility
  • Extended 402mm handle with slot design for finder scope or accessory mounting
  • Enhanced triplet tube ring design for maximum rigidity under heavy loads
  • Two finder scope bases flanking the focuser
  • EAF-compatible focuser for motorized autofocus
  • Ships in a protective aluminum case
  • Unique identification name ring on every unit
  • Dedicated optional reducer and flattener accessories planned for future release

Recommended Uses

  • Elite-level high-resolution deep-sky astrophotography with full-frame cameras
  • Galaxy imaging where 1421mm focal length and 203mm aperture reveal fine structural detail
  • Planetary nebulae, globular clusters, and fine-structure emission nebula imaging
  • LRGB and narrowband filter imaging at extreme resolution
  • Visual observing with 1.25" or 2" eyepieces and diagonals
  • Binoviewer use (rear tube contracted)

Compatibility and Accessory Notes

  • Rear thread: M84 female; includes 2"/1.25" visual adapters
  • Dovetail: 500mm Losmandy standard (included)
  • EAF: Compatible with ZWO EAF and most motorized focusers (sold separately)
  • Binoviewer: Rear tube contracts for compatibility
  • Optional reducer and flattener: Dedicated 203APO correctors are planned for future release by Askar

Important Limitations

  • At 23.5kg gross weight, requires an extremely high-payload equatorial mount — 30kg+ imaging capacity is strongly recommended
  • This is a permanent observatory instrument — not suitable for portable use, travel, or small mounts
  • Dedicated reducer and flattener accessories are not yet available at time of listing — monitor Askar for release
  • Strictly for expert-level users with substantial astrophotography experience
  • EAF and all accessories sold separately

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the 203APO compare to the 185APO?
The 203APO has 20% more aperture area, a deeper limiting magnitude of 13.3, a longer 1421mm focal length, a heavier 23.5kg gross weight, and a larger 500mm Losmandy dovetail. It requires the most capable mounts and is strictly an observatory-class instrument.

What mount do I need?
At 23.5kg gross, look for mounts with 30kg+ imaging payload — for example, a Skywatcher EQ8-R Pro, iOptron CEM120EC, Software Bisque Paramount, or similar observatory-grade mount. The 500mm Losmandy dovetail offers excellent balance range for this heavy OTA.

Are there reducers or flatteners available?
Askar has indicated that dedicated 203APO correctors are planned for future release. At the time of this listing, none are yet available. Please check with us for current availability.

Can I use it for visual observing?
Yes. The focuser accepts 1.25" and 2" diagonals and eyepieces. The rear tube contracts for binoviewer use.

Is motorized autofocus supported?
Yes — the focuser is compatible with ZWO EAF and most third-party motorized autofocusers (sold separately).

Our Recommendation

The Askar 203APO is the ultimate expression of the APO series — an eight-inch apochromatic refractor that delivers extraordinary resolution, depth, and optical quality in a highly refined mechanical package. If you operate a permanent observatory with a mount capable of handling 23.5kg+, and you want the finest refractor in this aperture class, the 203APO is a genuinely exceptional choice. Be aware that dedicated corrector accessories are not yet available, so this telescope is currently best used at its native f/7. Not suitable for beginners, portable rigs, or mounts with less than 30kg imaging payload.
