Your old Seestar is worth something

Buying an S30 Pro or S50 Pro? Send us the S30 or S50 it replaces and we will put store credit on your account toward a future order. Four questions below will tell you roughly what yours is worth before you make the trip.

01 How it works

Four steps, and the only one that takes real time is the inspection. Nothing is committed until you accept a written offer.

  1. Step 01

    Buy your Pro

    Order an S30 Pro or S50 Pro from us, in store or online. The Pro purchase is what makes you eligible.

  2. Step 02

    Send us your Seestar

    Drop it off at the shop, or ask for a mail-in authorisation and ship it to us insured.

  3. Step 03

    We inspect it

    A real evaluation needs a battery run-down and an on-sky test, so allow 3–10 business days. Then you get a written offer.

  4. Step 04

    You get store credit

    Accept the offer and we email you a gift card, redeemable on a future order. It never expires.

02 What we can accept

Working Seestar S30 and S50 units only. Any mechanical, electronic or functional fault makes a unit ineligible whatever it looks like — and so does anything below Good cosmetic condition.

ConditionSeestar S50Seestar S30
Excellent — complete in its original box, no marks visible at arm’s length, every function passesup to $300up to $250
Very Good — light cosmetic wear, complete, every function passesup to $240up to $200
Good — visible cosmetic wear or an accessory or two missing, every function still passesup to $170up to $140
Anything below Good, or any functional fault

Other smart telescopes

Vespera, eVscope, Dwarf, Celestron Origin and the rest are not part of this programme. We can often still sell them for you — ask us about consignment.

All amounts in Canadian dollars, issued as store credit. We do not pay cash, cheque or e-transfer for Seestar trade-ins with this programme.

03 Estimate your trade-in

Four questions. Everything runs in your browser — nothing is sent anywhere until you submit the request form in section 05.

The unit

1 · Which model do you have?
2 · Does everything work?

Powers up and holds a charge · arm and base move smoothly · connects to the app · finds and tracks targets

Condition

3 · Be straight with this one. The inspection sets the final number, and an accurate answer here is what keeps the offer from being a surprise.

What is still in the box

4 · Tick what you can send with it. Third-party extras — dew shields, dust covers, filter adapters, Bahtinov masks — do not change the credit, so keep those.

04 Programme terms

Read these in full. The request form unlocks once you have scrolled to the end and accepted.

1. What the programme is

Trade in a working ZWO Seestar S30 or Seestar S50 smart telescope and receive Ontario Telescope store credit toward a future purchase.

  • Credit is issued as a digital gift card, redeemable on a later order.
  • Credit is not applied to, and does not reduce the price of, the Seestar Pro purchase that qualifies you for the programme.
  • We do not pay cash, cheque, e-transfer, or refunds to a credit card for trade-in units. Store credit only.

2. Who can participate

You may trade in if you:

  • are 18 years of age or older;
  • have a shipping or billing address in Canada;
  • are the lawful owner of the unit and have the right to sell it; and
  • are purchasing a qualifying new Seestar Pro (see section 3).

Dealers, resellers, and bulk submissions are not eligible. We may limit trade-ins to two (2) units per household per calendar year.

3. Qualifying purchase

Participation requires the purchase of a new ZWO Seestar S30 Pro or Seestar S50 Pro (including Pro bundles and pre-orders) bought directly from Ontario Telescope and Accessories, in store or at ontariotelescope.com.

  • One trade-in unit per Pro purchased.
  • The Pro is paid for at its normal price. Your trade-in credit arrives separately, as a gift card for a future order.
  • Purchases from other retailers, marketplaces, or auction sites do not qualify.
  • Open-box, used, demo, and clearance Pro units do not qualify.

4. Eligible trade-in units

We accept:

Model Accepted
ZWO Seestar S50 Yes
ZWO Seestar S30 Yes
Seestar S30 Pro / S50 Pro No — current models
Vespera, eVscope, Dwarf, Celestron Origin, and other smart telescopes Not part of this programme. Please ask us about our consignment programme.

The unit must be a genuine ZWO product with its original, unaltered serial number intact and legible.

5. Condition requirements and trade-in values

We accept fully working units only. A Seestar with any mechanical, electronic, or functional fault is not eligible for this programme, regardless of cosmetic condition. See section 11.

Posted values are estimates based on condition tier, and are the maximum credit available for that tier:

Condition Seestar S50 Seestar S30
Excellent — complete in original box, no marks visible at arm’s length, every function passes up to $300 up to $250
Very Good — light cosmetic wear, complete, every function passes up to $240 up to $200
Good — visible cosmetic wear or one or two accessories missing, every function still passes up to $170 up to $140
Anything below Good, or any functional fault Not accepted Not accepted

The posted value is not an offer. The final offer is determined solely by our inspection (section 7). Posted values may change at any time; the value that applies is the one published on the day we receive your unit.

6. How to trade in

In store

  1. Buy your Seestar Pro (or place your pre-order).
  2. Bring your S30 or S50 to 670 Hardwick Rd, Unit 5, Bolton with everything listed in section 6.3.
  3. We complete a Trade-In Intake Form with you and give you a copy.
  4. Inspection follows the timeline in section 7. Units are not evaluated at the counter — a full evaluation includes a battery discharge test and an on-sky test.

By mail

  1. Buy your Seestar Pro (or place your pre-order).
  2. Request a Trade-In Authorisation by emailing trade@ontariotelescope.com with your order number, model, and photos. We reply with an authorisation number and instructions.
  3. Ship the unit to us, prepaid and insured, at your own risk and expense, with the authorisation number written on the outside of the box.
  4. Your authorisation is valid for 21 days. Units received after that are re-quoted at current values.

Pack the unit properly — ideally in its original box inside an outer carton with at least 5 cm of padding on all sides. Ontario Telescope is not responsible for units lost or damaged in transit to us. Risk of loss passes to us only when we receive and log the unit. Damage in transit will be reflected in the offer.

6.3 What to include

Required: the telescope itself.

Include if you have them (missing items reduce the offer):

  • Original box and foam/insert
  • Tripod (mini tripod or TC-series)
  • USB-C charging cable
  • Solar filter and its case
  • Carry bag or case
  • Quick-start guide and documentation

Do not send third-party accessories you want to keep (filters, dew shields, adapters, batteries, power banks, memory cards). Items sent to us are treated as part of the trade-in and cannot be returned separately.

7. Inspection and timing

We inspect every unit against a written checklist covering identity, optics, mechanics, battery, electronics, function, and accessories.

  • Inspection normally begins within 3 business days of receipt.
  • Because a complete evaluation includes a battery run-down test and a sky test under real conditions, inspection can take up to 10 business days, longer during extended cloudy periods.
  • Once inspection is complete we email you a written offer stating the assigned condition tier, the credit amount, and any deductions — or telling you the unit does not qualify and why.

8. Accepting, revising, or declining

  • You accept — store credit is issued per the timing in section 9.
  • The offer is lower than the posted estimate — you have 7 calendar days from the date of our email to accept or decline. If you do not reply within 7 days, the offer is deemed accepted and credit is issued. You will be told this clearly in the offer email.
  • You decline — we return the unit to you.
  • We decline the unit (section 11) — we return the unit to you.

We pay return shipping. Declined mail-in units are returned to you free of charge, by a carrier of our choosing, to the address on your trade-in authorisation. In-store units are returned free at the counter.

Abandoned units — if an in-store unit is not collected within 60 days of our notice, or a mailed return is refused or undeliverable and you do not provide a correct address within 60 days, we will treat the unit as abandoned and dispose of it. We will send at least two written reminders first.

Once you accept an offer and credit is issued, the transfer of ownership is final. We cannot return the unit to you afterward.

9. Store credit terms

What you receive. An Ontario Telescope digital gift card in Canadian dollars, emailed to the address on your order.

When you receive it. Within 14 days of the completed evaluation, or once the return window on your qualifying Pro purchase has closed — whichever is later. We will tell you the expected date in the offer email.

How it can be used.

  • Redeemable in store and online, on any product we sell, on a future order.
  • Can be used across multiple orders until the balance is spent.
  • Can be combined with sale pricing and with other gift cards. Whether it can be combined with a promotional discount code depends on the terms of that promotion.
  • Cannot be applied retroactively to the Pro purchase that qualified you for the programme, or to any order already placed.

Limits.

  • Not redeemable for cash, and not exchangeable for cash in whole or in part, except where applicable law requires otherwise.
  • Not transferable to another person or account.
  • Does not expire, and carries no dormancy, inactivity, or maintenance fee, in keeping with the Ontario Consumer Protection Act, 2002.
  • Treat the code like cash. We are not responsible for a gift card code that is lost, stolen, or shared by you after we send it, and we cannot reissue a spent balance.
  • If your purchase using the credit is later refunded, the refund is returned to the gift card, not to cash or to a payment card.
  • We will replace a card that has not been redeemed if it was never delivered because of an error on our end. Email trade@ontariotelescope.com.

10. Reset your device before you send it

Before handing over or shipping your unit, you must:

  1. Unbind the device from your ZWO / Seestar account in the Seestar app.
  2. Perform a factory reset on the device.
  3. Remove your microSD card and back up anything you want to keep.
  4. Remove saved Wi-Fi networks.

If a unit reaches us still bound to your account, we will contact you and hold it until it is released. A unit that cannot be unbound cannot be accepted.

We wipe internal storage as part of intake, but you are responsible for your own data. Ontario Telescope is not liable for images, files, or other data lost from a traded-in device or a memory card left inside it.

11. Units we cannot accept

This programme is for fully functional units in Good condition or better. We will decline, and return free of charge, any unit that:

Has a functional fault of any kind, including but not limited to:

  • a mechanical fault — binding, grinding, slipping, or noisy altitude or azimuth motion; a focuser that will not reach focus; an arm that will not hold position;
  • an electronic fault — will not power on, will not hold a charge, an intermittent or damaged USB-C port, Wi-Fi that will not connect, failure to pair with the Seestar app, firmware that will not update, a dead dew heater, faulty internal storage;
  • a functional fault — failure to plate solve, failure to track, sensor defects outside manufacturer specification, or any fault that prevents normal imaging.

Or is unsafe or unsellable, including any unit that:

  • has a swollen, leaking, or damaged battery (see below);
  • shows liquid damage, corrosion, or moisture inside the optics;
  • has a cracked, chipped, or deeply scratched objective lens;
  • has a missing, altered, or unreadable serial number;
  • is counterfeit or not a genuine ZWO product;
  • shows evidence of disassembly or non-authorised repair;
  • cannot be unbound from a previous owner’s account;
  • is reported lost or stolen; or
  • carries smoke, mould, pest, or biohazard contamination.

Or is below Good condition — heavy wear, cracked or broken housings, deep marks on the objective, or several accessories missing.

Battery safety exception: a unit with a swollen or damaged lithium battery cannot legally be shipped. We will notify you, and you may collect it in person within 30 days or authorise us to recycle it at no charge.

12. Ownership, title, and legal warranties

By submitting a unit you represent and warrant that:

  • you own it outright, free of any lien, loan, or security interest;
  • it is not stolen and has not been reported lost or stolen;
  • you have the legal right to transfer ownership to us; and
  • the information you gave us about it is true.

We record serial numbers and may check them against manufacturer and law-enforcement records. If a unit is confirmed stolen we will surrender it to police and we will not issue credit or return the unit. We may also recover any credit already issued.

13. Taxes

Your Seestar Pro purchase is a normal retail sale and HST applies to the full price of the Pro, as it would on any other order.

Your trade-in is handled separately. Issuing a gift card is not a taxable supply, so no HST is charged on the trade-in credit when it is issued. HST is charged normally on whatever you later buy with it.

14. What happens to your unit

Traded-in units become the property of Ontario Telescope and Accessories. We may refurbish, resell, part out, donate, or recycle them at our discretion. Units resold by us are sold as pre-owned with condition disclosed, and are not represented as new or as manufacturer-refurbished.

15. If you return or cancel your Pro

The qualifying Pro purchase is what makes you eligible. If it goes away, so does the trade-in.

Timing does most of the work here. Under section 9, credit is not issued until the return window on your Pro has closed. So in the normal case there is nothing to unwind:

  • You cancel or return the Pro before credit is issued — the trade-in is cancelled and your unit is returned to you free of charge under section 8. No credit is issued.
  • You cancel or return the Pro after credit is issued (for example, on a warranty return outside the normal window) — the credit is reversed. If it is unspent, we void the gift card. If it has been spent, its value is deducted from your Pro refund.
  • Either way, your traded-in unit is not returned once credit has been issued and the transfer is final under section 8.

A warranty repair, a warranty exchange for the same model, or an upgrade to a different Pro model does not affect your trade-in credit.

16. Changes, fraud, and limits

  • We may change, suspend, or end this programme, or change posted values, at any time without notice. Changes do not affect a written offer already issued to you.
  • We may refuse any trade-in, or cancel a trade-in, where we reasonably suspect fraud, abuse, misrepresentation, or resale activity.
  • Our total liability in connection with a trade-in is limited to the greater of the credit amount offered or the documented fair market value of the unit, and we are not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential losses, including lost data or lost imaging time.
  • Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under the Ontario Consumer Protection Act, 2002 or other applicable law.

17. Privacy

We collect your name, contact details, order number, device serial number, and inspection results to run the programme, prevent fraud, and meet our legal obligations. We keep these records for 7 years and do not sell them. Serial numbers may be shared with ZWO or with law enforcement where required. See our Privacy Policy at ontariotelescope.com.

18. Governing law and contact

These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the applicable laws of Canada.

06 What you are trading up to

Both Pro models keep the all-in-one idea and add the things the original Seestars could not do — better optics, ASCOM Alpaca so they talk to NINA and friends, and equatorial mode for long exposures.

The compact one, reworked. Lighter to carry to a dark site, and the natural step up if your S30 has earned its keep.

07 Common questions

Why can’t you just look at it at the counter?

Because the faults that matter do not show up in a two-minute look. A tired battery only reveals itself in a full run-down under load, and tracking, plate solving, sensor dust and star shape only show up in a real stack under a real sky. We would rather take three to ten business days and give you a number we will stand behind than guess at the counter and revise it later.

Why store credit and not cash?

Store credit is what lets us pay more than a cash buyer would. It costs us less than cash does, and we pass that difference back to you as a higher number. If cash is what you need, a private sale will almost always beat any trade-in programme — that is an honest answer, not a sales pitch.

Mine has a fault. Is it really worthless to you?

Not worthless — just not a fit for this programme. We only resell units we can stand behind, and we have no ZWO parts pipeline for discontinued models, so a repair is not something we can price honestly. If you are not certain whether what you are seeing is a fault or just unfamiliar behaviour, send the request anyway and describe it. We would much rather tell you before you make the trip.

What if the inspection comes back lower than the estimate?

You get the revised number in writing with the reasons, and seven days to accept or decline. Decline and we send the unit back — free of charge, including mail-in returns. The estimator on this page is deliberately built to land close: it asks about objective marks and missing accessories because those are the two things that move the number most.

What happens to my images and my account?

Unbind the device from your ZWO account, factory reset it and take your microSD card out before you send it — a unit we cannot unbind is a unit we cannot accept. We wipe internal storage at intake as well, but back up anything you care about first. We cannot recover images from a traded-in device.

Do I have to buy the Pro first?

You need a Pro purchase to be eligible, but you can start the conversation before you order — there is a “not decided yet” option on the form. The credit is a gift card for a future order, so it does not come off the Pro invoice, and it is issued once the Pro’s return window has closed.

Seestar Pro Trade-Up · Terms v1.1 · Effective 24 August 2026

The figure this page produces is an estimate, not an offer. It is the most a unit in the condition you described could be worth. The final amount is set by our inspection — which includes a battery run-down and an on-sky test — and is given to you in writing before anything is final. Posted values may change at any time; the values that apply are the ones published on the day we receive your unit. Full terms are in section 04.
