Starfield 10" / F5 Dobsonian
Wow! I purchased my first scope in 1999. It was a Meade LXD 500, Newtonian reflector. It never really quite lived up to the expectations I had for it. The Starfield Dob is going to make you smile. It made me smile. The 10" mirror makes things bright, really bright. The first night I had it in the backyard of a Winnipeg Bortle 8-9 sky, I looked at M-57, before the end of civil twilight. F5 doesn't make you think planetary scope, but with the good fortune of reasonable seeing, despite poor transparency, Saturn and Jupiter come alive in ways that a camera is needed for even in dark skies with a small refractor. You do need to collimate this scope before you view with it to see the sharpest detail, but it will not disappoint you once the mirrors are aligned. My partner struggled to get away from the eyepiece once Saturn was in focus for her. The rings, the gap, the collection of moons around the planet had her captivated like a child. I purchased the scope with the hope of observing variables from an urban location. I'm pleased to report that I have achieved initial success, locating and estimating stars at mag 12 in the bright skies of Winnipeg. The right angle, correct image finder was a pleasant surprise. It is the most friendly and useful finder I have had included with a scope purchase, and is my current favorite. The spring loaded three point adjustment makes aligning the finder effortless and quick anytime you move the scope and need to remove the device. That being said, I did opt to install a Rigel Qwikfinder on this scope. It is the perfect companion. It can be positioned between the RA finder and the focuser, to allow easy rapid pointing of the scope by looking up along the tube. In the bright urban sky the 50mm objective of the finder allows enough light gathering that some pointer stars can be found to star hop. In closing, I want to reiterate Ed Ting's suggestion, and that of every visual Dobsonian advocate out there... get an 8 or 10" Dobsonian .. its the best first scope you could ever lay your hands on for visual astronomy. This Starfield is also most excellently packaged with excellent accessories! .
