- Description
- Specifications
The Celestron NexStar 5SE Computerized Telescope is a compact 5-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope system designed for visual observers who want GoTo object location, portability, and more light-gathering power than the smaller 4SE. With a 125mm aperture, 1250mm focal length, f/10 optical system, StarBright XLT coatings, SkyAlign, and the NexStar computerized mount, the 5SE is a versatile telescope for lunar, planetary, double-star, and bright deep-sky observing.
Who Is This Product Best For?
The NexStar 5SE is best for beginners and intermediate observers who want a compact computerized telescope with a good balance of portability and performance. It is a strong fit for backyard observers, cottage users, families, outreach, and customers upgrading from a smaller starter telescope.
Compared with the 4SE, the 5SE provides more aperture and a wider range of useful visual targets while still remaining easier to transport than the larger 6SE and 8SE systems.
Why Choose This Product?
- 5-inch aperture: Gathers more light than smaller beginner telescopes for better views of the Moon, planets, star clusters, and brighter deep-sky objects.
- Schmidt-Cassegrain optical design: Provides a long focal length in a short, portable optical tube.
- Computerized GoTo mount: Finds and tracks objects selected from the NexStar hand controller.
- 40,000+ object database: Includes planets, stars, nebulae, clusters, galaxies, and curated observing lists.
- SkyAlign technology: Lets users align the telescope using any three bright objects.
- StarBright XLT coatings: Improve contrast and light transmission.
- Portable single fork arm design: Breaks down into practical components for transport and storage.
Recommended Uses
- Lunar observing
- Planetary observing
- Double stars
- Star clusters
- Bright nebulae and galaxies
- Backyard and cottage astronomy
- Introductory lunar and planetary imaging
Compatibility and Accessory Notes
The NexStar 5SE includes the computerized single fork arm mount, tripod, StarPointer red dot finderscope, NexStar+ hand control, 25mm eyepiece, and 1.25-inch star diagonal. It uses Celestron’s compact SCT platform and supports many common Celestron visual and imaging accessories.
The computerized mount requires power. Although AA batteries can be used, Ontario Telescope generally recommends a reliable external 12V power supply or astronomy battery pack for longer observing sessions.
Useful optional accessories include a dew shield or dew heater, additional eyepieces, external power supply, StarSense AutoAlign, SkyPortal WiFi module, focal reducer/corrector, T-adapter, and planetary imaging camera.
Important Limitations
The NexStar 5SE is excellent for visual observing and basic lunar or planetary imaging, but it is not the ideal telescope for long-exposure deep-sky astrophotography on the standard alt-azimuth mount. Deep-sky imaging requires additional equipment, experience, and realistic expectations.
The 5-inch aperture is a strong middle ground, but customers who want substantially brighter deep-sky views may prefer the NexStar 6SE or 8SE.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Celestron NexStar 5SE good for beginners?
Yes. It is a strong beginner-to-intermediate computerized telescope because it is portable, has GoTo object location, and provides more aperture than very small starter telescopes.
What can I see with the NexStar 5SE?
The NexStar 5SE is well suited for the Moon, Jupiter, Saturn, Mars when favourable, double stars, open clusters, globular clusters, bright nebulae, and brighter galaxies under dark skies.
Can the NexStar 5SE find objects automatically?
Yes. After alignment, the computerized GoTo mount can automatically slew to and track selected objects from the NexStar database.
Can the NexStar 5SE be used for astrophotography?
It is best for visual observing and lunar or planetary imaging. Long-exposure deep-sky astrophotography is limited by the standard alt-azimuth mount.
Does it need power?
Yes. The computerized mount requires power. An external 12V power source is recommended for reliable use.
Our Recommendation
At Ontario Telescope and Accessories, we recommend the Celestron NexStar 5SE for customers who want a portable computerized telescope with more capability than the smallest SE model but less bulk than the 6SE or 8SE. Choose it for lunar, planetary, and bright-object observing with GoTo convenience. Choose the 6SE or 8SE if you want noticeably more light-gathering power for deep-sky viewing.
