    Starfield Optics 16" Truss Dobsonian

Posted by Steve Ritchie on August 13, 2023

One month in, here are my impressions of the Starfield Optics 16" Truss Dobsonoan. Even though I'm not an especially handy person, base assembly was smooth and I was able to follow the diagramatic instructions with no difficulty. I was initially concerned about weight. I'm 63, of average upper-body strength at best, and this is a big scope. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that I can haul, unload, assemble, disassemble and pack this scope myself, although for first couple of attempts I had a spotter to make sure I didn't get into any trouble. I drive a Kia Rondo and the scope stows easily with the back seat down (in fact with both seats down we can pack it and our 8" solid tube dob). The ball-and-socket truss assembly is not something I'd seen before. It's very positive and secure. The truss poles are very light but very strong. Right out of the box I replaced the stock Phillips-type secondary mirror adjustment screws with Bob's Knobs - we checked in the scope shop to make sure they fit. This scope is an aperture upgrade for me from a pretty good 12" dob, and this puppy does what it's supposed to do: gathers a lot of light. First views ot M13, Lagoon Nebula, and the Ring Nebula made me hoot and holler. I've had it out about 12 times so far, for both deep sky and sidewalk outreach (which is mostly lunar) and to this point I find the performance to be spectacular. The Crayford-style focuser is smooth and responsive. One pleasant surprise is motion. This is my third dob and notwithstanding how heavy it is, it's by far the smoothest in both axes. It's a big, heavy mirror, which consequenty requires a good bit of cool-down time coming out of a hot car. The built-in fan comes with a battery pack (batteries not included) but I've been able to bypass that and plug it directly into my PowerTank. Aesthetically it's a very nice looking instrument. The gleaming black finish, together with its size, lends an almost-menacing, 'Darth Vader' aspect. I should also mention that Steve at Ontario Telescopes was helpful and pleasant to deal with on what was a long, drawn-out transaction. Granted it's still early days, but I'm more than happy with this telecope.
